Mobil SHC™ 630 gear oil success story

Situation

Honam Petrochemical Corporation produces Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) and operates two large 4.2 MW extruders with Kobe Steel, Ltd. gearboxes running three shifts a day, seven days a week. Lubricated with a competitive mineral ISO VG 220 gear oil, the extruder gearboxes run on rigorous production schedules. Honam asked Mobil engineers to identify a gear lubricant to increase gearbox reliability and extend the oil drain interval.

Recommendation

Mobil engineers recommended transitioning to Mobil SHC™ 630. Formulated with high viscosity synthetic base fluids and a proprietary additive system, Mobil SHC™ 630 gear oil is designed to provide outstanding performance in extreme service applications. Mobil also recommended implementing routine Mobil Serv℠ Lubricant Analysis to monitor the condition of the extruder components and in-service lubricant.

Result

Since the transition to Mobil SHC™ 630 synthetic gear oil, the extruder gearboxes have been running smoothly and power consumption is down by 4.8 per cent. The performance benefits delivered by Mobil SHC™ 630 have resulted in a US $60,000 annual savings for the plant.
